    Hello neighbors,

I’ve been a member of Vecinos since 2019 and am also one of the founding members of the HMB Sargassum Project.  I’m a strong advocate for transparency on any issue that impacts our community.  So, I’m writing to inform my fellow members that I recently sent an email to the donor list of the HMB Sargassum Project endorsing the six candidates below for the Vecinos board.

    Alex Malison

    Ingrid Datica (Vice President)

Ingrid has many years of service on the board under her belt.  She’s worked hard on issues like recycling and regularizing the legal status of Akumal Norte vis a vis the government in Tulum.  More recently she’s proved her chops in helping bring ambulance service to Akumal.  She’s got the hands-on experience and commitment to serve as second in command of our association.

    Liane Perry (Secretary)

Liane is an active member of the North Akumal community who has done a terrific job communicating with neighbors about the successes (and setbacks) of the HMB Sargassum Project.  She brings a wealth of contract and project management experience from her career in technology sales and is detail oriented and data driven, key skills for a Secretary. She also has plenty of professional experience with remote work so is sure to remain an active board member whether serving from her condo in La Bahia or her home in Nashua, NH.  Most importantly, Liane, is committed to using her communications skills for new member recruitment.

    Craig Conklin (At Large Seat)

Craig is a full time resident of Akumal Norte who retired to Akumal Norte from a long career in the construction industry.  He would be an ideal addition to the Vecinos Maintenance Committee and already has deep contacts with local service providers given his contracting role as HOA president at Playa Blanca. He’s got lots of experience in budgeting for multi-year projects and, if elected, would focus his skills on establishing a reserve fund for emergency maintenance projects.  Craig owns a home near Bush Park as well as a rental condo so understands the different perspectives of full time residents and second home owners who rely on rental income and will serve as an important bridge between these two communities.

    Mike  Dunning (At Large Seat)

A second home owner with a condo in Luna Azul who resides full time in Colorado, His candidacy is built on a hard fought effort to strengthen the voices of second home owners on the Vecinos board by dropping the requirement that all board members be legal residents of Mexico.  Mike is the perfect person to attract new members, like him, who care a lot about the health of rental markets and tourism in Akumal Norte.  A vote for Mike is a vote for proportional representation of owners who are not legal residents of Mexico!!  Mike is also keen to help with new initiatives to improve ambulance and other health services in Akumal Norte, as well as in the pueblo.

    Jon Kantor (At Large Seat)

Jon has been coming to Akumal Norte since he was a teenager so knows our community inside out.  Over the last few years Jon has thrown his prodigious energies into running Vecinos Annual Meeting and, in this role, has demonstrated a steady hand and commitment to building bridges among factions in our community.

    Peter Swenson (At Large Seat)

Peter Swenson has proved his chops as a member of the Vecinos board who served thru 2024 and brought a wealth of professional management experience to the job.  He was instrumental in improving security at the entrance to our community and is eager to get back to work on keeping our community safe, as well as engaging on the many other longstanding issues he was involved in during his tenure.

I am not endorsing any candidates with this post but want to remind owners or educate newer owners if they don't already know regarding the reason for 1 and 2 year terms on the board of Vecinos. The terms were made that way so that each year the board would not be starting over. This arrangement was implemented to insure a continuous flow of information from one year to the next. I bring this up as those of you that are lobbying for a complete new board - 4 new vocals and a new secretary - do you realize that is actually probably not in the best interest of North Akumal? We would lose valuable information on the maintenance of our roads, the government committee which we know the government really only wants to work with Spanish speaking people and preferably Mexicans, and all the history of the last 20 plus years of what we need to do to keep our community safe. New board members are welcome but don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I think the lobbying is for a CHANGE  in the balance of the Board and yes this is NEW.  Those that implemented the staggered term rules were very foresited  to do it in that manner.

We will currently retain Scott (President),Neil (Treasurer), Beryl (At Large) and with the reelection of Ingrid (Vice President) we will have a solid, experienced leadership moving forward. The change that I endorse are Liane Perry (Secretary), Peter Swenson (At Large) Craig Conklin (At Large) and Jon Kantor (At large). This new alignment will bring in fresh ideas, a broad range of experience and an open mindedness that seems to be lacking.
