New Signs Improve the Entrance to Akumal Norte

A Step Toward a More Organized and Welcoming Community

Akumal Norte will continue to grow, as the real estate and tourism sectors are experiencing significant growth, resulting in new construction and increased burdens on roads and services. With this in mind, it’s essential that we take steps now to ensure our community develops in a way that is organized, and aligned with the natural beauty of the area.

Akumal also faces important challenges that we must acknowledge and address together:

  • Lack of a coherent urban image that represents our identity.
  • Insufficient or disorganized signage.
  • Deteriorated street furniture or elements out of harmony with the surroundings.
  • Absence of safe pedestrian walkways or sidewalks, putting residents and visitors at risk.
  • Urban growth without a unified vision or aesthetic planning.
  • Increasing traffic congestion, with trucks, mototaxis, vans, and bicycles moving without control.

Despite all this, Akumal maintains great potential. Its essence lives on, and this is our opportunity to protect it and project it with dignity.

One of the key efforts currently underway is the Urban Image Project—a long-term plan to improve the overall appearance and infrastructure of Akumal Norte. This includes enhancing roads, sidewalks, lighting, signage, and public spaces to create a more cohesive and attractive environment for residents and visitors alike.

As part of these efforts, we’ve recently taken the first steps to improve the entrance to Akumal Norte. New signs have been installed to help guide residents and visitors and support better organization throughout our community.

This initiative is part of a broader vision to make the entrance to Akumal more beautiful, functional, and welcoming. In the coming weeks, we will begin enhancing the area with landscaping and native plants, helping to create a greener and more inviting environment that reflects the natural beauty of Akumal.

We’ve also installed a “No Buses” sign near the highway to help reduce congestion and prevent large vehicles from entering areas where they are not permitted. In addition, we’ve placed new regulatory signs at the entrance, including speed bump warnings and informational signs at the gate to clearly communicate the rules to visitors—especially regarding the consequences of damaging or forcing the entry gate. These small but important actions support a safer, more organized, and better-informed arrival experience for everyone entering Akumal.

To support this vision, we have established a collaboration with the University of La Salle, through which a team of architects and an engineer have been assisting us in designing a more functional and attractive entrance, as well as planning a pedestrian-friendly sidewalk that connects the area more safely and efficiently.

Looking ahead, we are also exploring the addition of informational signs with QR codes, which would provide access to educational content about Akumal’s unique wildlife and natural ecosystems. A community map is also in the works—something that would help visitors locate local businesses, services, and key points of interest within Akumal Norte.

We also want to hear from the community about other signs or ideas that should be included in future plans. Your input is valuable and will help shape a shared vision for Akumal.

This is just the beginning. We believe that a well-marked, thoughtfully designed entrance and urban image set the tone for the entire community. As we move forward, we’ll continue making improvements and welcome ideas from all neighbors who want to be part of this effort.
