A New initiative by the Collectivo "Akción Akumal"
The “Akción Akumal” collective is a group of residents deeply committed to promoting environmental education in our community. Their mission is to raise awareness, foster environmental values, encourage critical thinking, and inspire sustainable actions that strengthen both individual and collective responsibility toward our natural surroundings.
Their activities include environmental film screenings, health talks, recycling and composting workshops, recycling collection campaigns, sterilization drives, educational games, and a green market, all designed to connect people with nature and nurture appreciation for it.
This initiative was inspired by the Urban Solid Waste Management Program of Akumal Norte (Programa de Residuos Sólidos Urbanos) an ongoing community effort that integrates recycling, composting, and local collaboration. Following this successful model, the collective aims to continue building environmental awareness and collective action through education and shared experience.
The first event took place on November 1st, featuring a screening of “The Book of Life.” Families enjoyed an evening of reflection on authenticity, love, compassion for animals, and the importance of honoring life through remembrance.
Vecinos de Akumal Norte, the Akumal Norte Neighborhood Association joined this meaningful initiative by donating a projection screen for the Environmental Cinema project, made possible thanks to the kind support of Elizabeth Bautista, who introduced the project to the Association.
Special thanks also go to Delegate Tony Sosa for providing the facilities at Parque de la Serpiente and for his team’s valuable assistance for the event.
The “Akción Akumal” Collective plans to continue organizing educational and recreational activities that inspire everyone to care for and celebrate our natural environment.
