Recycling Management Plan Follow-up
A follow-up phase of the Recycling Management Plan will begin on May 20, 2026 and run through June 20, 2026. Our consultant Elizabeth Bautista will be in Akumal to continue the implementation and coordination work, with CEA`s participation.
We will be working on:
We will be also conducting meetings with key community members and help strengthen the long-term environmental management efforts in Akumal.
Information and updates regarding the program will continue to be shared with the community through the various WhatsApp groups available.
Why Everyone Needs to Comply with this Program
The Recycling and Environmental Management Program is part of the Government Project because environmental regulations in Quintana Roo are becoming increasingly strict and state and municipal authorities are implementing stronger environmental and waste management requirements throughout the region.
One of the requirements for obtaining municipal operational permits and licenses is the Operación Ambiental license. To obtain this license, it is necessary to present documentation including:
For this reason, we have been working for several years to organize Akumal and prepare the community before these regulations become even more demanding.
It is also important to understand that this program is much broader than simply household trash and recycling. It includes environmental and infrastructure issues that directly affect the community, such as:
Implementing these programs strengthens our relationship with government agencies and improves our ability to request and receive support when needed, as we have already experienced during the sargassum cleanup efforts.
Protecting Akumal’s natural resources is essential not only for the environment but also for tourism, property values, public health, and the long-term sustainability of the community.
Monthly Recycling Collection
The establishment of a monthly recycling collection system, along with clear guidelines for proper waste separation, has been an important step forward for the community.
The importance of recycling has been widely communicated, but consistent commitment and participation remain a challenge. This is a program that can only function effectively if everyone participates actively and responsibly.
Progress has been slower than expected, largely because there is still not full appreciation of how important this effort truly is. More than an optional initiative, recycling is a shared responsibility that requires consistency to achieve real impact.
This project has the potential to become a leading example that the government is seeking, positioning Akumal Norte as a model community in responsible waste management.
With greater participation and commitment, this program can be strengthened and provide lasting benefits for everyone.
Punto Limpio & Urban Image Project
Looking ahead, the development of the Punto Limpio, a dedicated recycling drop-off center will be integrated into the broader Urban Image Project, aligning environmental efforts with the long-term vision for the organization and appearance of our community.

Moving Forward
This program is not only about compliance, it is about preserving the natural beauty and integrity of our community for generations to come. We sincerely thank everyone who has participated and supported these efforts. With steady commitment, we will continue moving forward together.
