Akumal Norte Governance

Managing Our Government Relationships

Our relationships with government entities are essential to maintaining our independence as a community and preserving our unique status. The Vecinos Government Committee manages and develops these relationships, which touch almost everything Vecinos does.

Municipalization

One of our key goals is to maintain Akumal Norte's independence by avoiding municipalization. Please click here to learn more about municipalization and what it would mean for our community.

The Vecinos Government Committee works to establish and maintain agreements with the Tulum municipal government and other authorities that benefit and protect North Akumal’s character, environment, security, and quality of life. To do this, we must establish Vecinos as the recognized legal representative for Akumal Norte (including both Vecinos member and non-members) and build the consensus among owners on prioriites and plans that the Tulum authorities will eventually demand.

Catastro

One of the key areas identified for improvement is the cadastral system (“Catastro”), which in Mexico serves as the official registry of real property, including location, dimensions, and assessed value, and is managed by the local treasury office (Tesorería).

In Akumal Norte, historical inconsistencies and gaps in cadastral records have created uncertainties regarding the precise boundaries of the community and, in some cases, individual properties. Addressing these discrepancies is essential for providing legal certainty to property owners and for advancing important community initiatives such as infrastructure improvements, pedestrian pathways, and future service systems.

Moving forward, the success of this effort depends on the participation of all property owners. It is strongly recommended that each owner ensure their property titles and documentation are in proper order and fully updated. Clear and accurate definition of property boundaries across Akumal Norte is essential to strengthening legal certainty, supporting community planning, and facilitating coordination with authorities.

Akumal Urban Image Project

The Akumal Urban Image Project is a community-driven initiative aimed at organizing and improving our public spaces while preserving the natural character and identity of Akumal.

As our community continues to grow, it becomes essential to guide that growth with intention, ensuring safer mobility, better infrastructure, and a more coherent visual environment. This project focuses on enhancing the main public areas, particularly roadways and their surrounding spaces, through thoughtful design that respects the environment and strengthens our sense of place.

More than a design effort, this project represents a collective step toward a more organized, functional, and respected community.
