Akumal Norte Governance

Managing Our Government Relationships

Our relationships with government entities are essential to maintaining our independence as a community and preserving our unique status. The Vecinos Government Committee manages and develops these relationships, which touch almost everything Vecinos does.

Municipalization

One of our key goals is to maintain Akumal Norte's independence by avoiding municipalization. Please click here to learn more about municipalization and what it would mean for our community.

The Vecinos Government Committee works to establish and maintain agreements with the Tulum municipal government and other authorities that benefit and protect North Akumal’s character, environment, security, and quality of life. To do this, we must establish Vecinos as the recognized legal representative for Akumal Norte (including both Vecinos member and non-members) and build the consensus among owners on prioriites and plans that the Tulum authorities will eventually demand.

Vecinos commissioned a study from a consultant in 2022 at a cost of $250,000 pesos to assess the current situation and identify key areas for action. The report was funded from the Vecinos budget and was delivered in June 2022.

Catastro

One of the key issues identified in the consultant's report was Catastro. In Mexico, Catastro refers to the cadastral system, which is an inventory of real property, including location, dimensions, and value. The system is managed by the treasury office (Tesorería) in each state. One of the key challenges we face in Akumal Norte is that our Catastrophic information has not been properly maintained over the years, resulting in uncertainty about the boundaries of our community and of some of the properties within it. The Vecinos Government Committee is working with the municipal government in Tulum to resolve these uncertainties, which will protect individual owners and allow us to proceed on initiatives ranging from sidewalks to a sewer system.

Urban Image

Another of the key findings of the study was the need to demonstrate Vecinos' leadership in developing and maintaining the public infrastructure and urban image of Akumal Norte.

In furtherance of this goal, Vecinos is collaborating with Universidad La Salle in Cancun to explore innovative design options for our electricity,  water, telephone, and sewer systems as well as on design of sidewalks and bicycle paths to enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and aesthetics throughout Akumal Norte.

Three to four La Salle architectural students will do their theses about Akumal Norte. We will choose a winner and donate prizes (e.g., a computer) for the entrants.

Our goal is enhance the resilience and sustainability of our infrastructure and meet the evolving needs of our residents and visitors alike.
