Urban Image Program Update

The Akumal Urban Image Project continues to move forward as a key initiative to organize, strengthen, and project our community in a way that aligns with our values.  We are now entering an important phase of development.

Over the past weeks, meaningful progress has been made. The conceptual design, led by Architect Javier Muñoz, is currently in development and is helping to define a clear direction aligned with the identity and character of Akumal. This evolving concept focuses on integrating pathways, lighting, signage, and urban elements in a way that respects the natural environment while improving functionality and safety.

With this work in progress, the project is moving into a more detailed and structured stage.

Current conditions and intervention areas

This view help us clearly identify the areas that will be part of the first phase of intervention. These spaces, primarily the roadway and its surrounding edges, represent the main public entry areas of the community and are where the project will begin to take shape.

Where are we today?

We are currently working on:

  • Ongoing development and refinement of the conceptual design
  • Technical details and design adjustments
  • Development of cost estimates and budgets
  • Evaluation of materials and implementation strategies
  • Identification of priority areas for initial intervention

This phase is essential to ensure that the project is not only well-designed, but also feasible, sustainable, and aligned with community priorities.

Progress is steady and thoughtful, with a clear focus on doing things properly from the beginning.

Concept Design in Progress

Conceptual design in development by Architect Javier Muñoz, illustrating proposed integration of pathways, and urban elements aligned with Akumal’s identity.

These images represent the direction of the project. The concept seeks to create safer, more organized, and visually harmonious public spaces, while maintaining respect for the natural environment.

It is important to note that the design is still evolving and will continue to be refined as the project progresses.

Community participation

This continues to be a community driven effort.

We will keep sharing updates as the project evolves, and we welcome those who would like to contribute, participate, or stay involved in the process.
