Asociación de Vecinos de Akumal Norte A.C. (“Vecinos”) is a Mexican Asociación Civil (nonprofit civil association) and our legal entity as a community. It was formed to handle day-to-day maintenance and security work within our community and make agreements with our local, state and federal government. Without Vecinos, North Akumal would have no road, no security, no Community Center, and no voice in Tulum or other Mexican government agencies.
So, what does Vecinos do for you?
Security
- One of the most visible things Vecinos handles is coordinating and paying for and overseeing the security guards and operations at the Pluma/Gate, at the entrance to North Akumal.
- Vecinos also built and pays most expenses for the Community Center building that houses the National Guard in North Akumal.
- These are two of the biggest day-to-day benefits that we all receive as owners. Visible security helps owners and their guests feel safer and enhances North Akumal as a tourist destination. It's also Vecinos' largest expense, comprising more than half of our annual budget.
Government Relations
- Another key benefit Vecinos provides to you is our ongoing work with our local government in Tulum to procure better services for North Akumal.
- If you’ve ever been to a local government office to do anything, you know what this entails. It takes lots of time and effort and many meetings with heads of the various government departments to make connections, build relationships and get assistance for the various needs of our community.
- The more owners that are Vecinos members, the more credibility Vecinos has in Tulum, so please join us and help us help you!
Community Infrastructure
- Vecinos maintains the road that we all depend on. We just completed a major repair in front of Playa Caribe condos, where the road was sinking and creating a very dangerous condition.
- Vecinos provides and maintains public street lighting to make our community safer and more beautiful.
- Vecinos coordinates community clean-up efforts of our parks and other public spaces.
- None of these are services that Tulum provides us, so if we didn't handle them, they wouldn't get done. They are possible only if we all of our part and become members.
Becoming a Vecinos member supports all of these services and gives you a vote in Vecinos board elections, the opportunity to participate in member surveys and online community forums, and access to board meeting minutes and the member directory.
If you’re already a member, thank you so much! If you’re not a member, one of the best things you can do to help your community and yourself is to become a member and get involved. Annual dues for Vecinos are modest, and we strive to keep them as low as possible: $5,500 pesos per year (about $280 USD) for a condo and $13,000 pesos per year (about $660 USD) for a casa, plus a one-time $5,000 pesos (about $250 USD) initiation fee.
