Akumal Emergency Medical Services Program
The Akumal Emergency Medical Services Program was created to strengthen emergency response in our community, uniting residents, businesses, and organizations around a shared purpose: to save lives and be prepared when every second counts.
Akumal is home to residents, workers, and visitors from around the world. In a cardiac emergency, the first minutes are critical, and immediate access to the right equipment and trained support can make the difference between life and death.
The ambulance service in Akumal is a reality and has made a big difference for our community. In a short time, we have seen faster response time and better coordination in emergencies. Most importantly, it has saved lives. This service is proving to be an essential part of our community’s wellbeing.

This collective effort reflects the strength of Akumal as a community working together.
The Medical Emergencies Committee supports coordination, communication, and program development, but does not operate medical services directly.
Community Informational Meeting
On March 2, 2026, we held our first community informational meeting at La Buena Vida Restaurant, with strong participation both in person and via Zoom.
We were honored to have the presence of:
During the meeting, attendees received valuable information about hospital services, insurance, and emergency procedures.
The paramedics and ambulance service team also explained how the service operates in the area, including response protocols and general coordination during emergencies.
They explained that once an emergency call is received, the ambulance team responds immediately and provides on-site assistance to stabilize the patient. After the initial care, the patient can be transported to the hospital of their choice. However, the ambulance service has a working agreement with Hospital Joya in Playa del Carmen, where patients are received and treated immediately, without requiring prior insurance verification. This ensures that medical attention is not delayed and that patient safety always comes first. Doctors and nurse english speaking are available.
Training the Community
One of the most important pillars of this program is community training.
We recently completed three days of free Medic First Aid training, offered to the community and led by Red Cross instructor Linda Mulgrew.
We extend our sincere thanks to:

On March 20, 2026, we also held a Certified Medic First Aid course at CEA, led by instructor Paramedic German Coral Canul from E. M .T .
Community members and staff participated in this full-day certification (10:00 AM / 4:00 PM).
It is important to note that municipal rental licenses require at least one trained staff member, and many businesses in Akumal are now actively ensuring their teams are certified. This is a significant step forward for our community.

During its first period of operation, the ambulance service responded to 19 emergency cases in Akumal and surrounding areas.
The most common situations included trauma injuries, respiratory issues, and chronic medical conditions. Several cases involved serious or life-threatening emergencies, where rapid response and immediate care were critical.
These early results already show the importance of having a local ambulance service, helping reduce response times, improve coordination, and, most importantly, save lives in our community.
This program is growing thanks to the support of our community. Together, we are building a safer and better-prepared Akumal.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed.
