    Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We had a great 2nd Akumal Norte Community Sargassum meeting Saturday July 19th at La Buena Vida, with 35 people in attendance. You can click here to see the video and click here to see the slides that were presented.

In the short term, the sargassum that’s been left to rot along Half Moon Bay desperately needs our attention. A few buildings have been working on removing sargassum diligently throughout the year (and we thank you sincerely, Playa Blanca, Nikte Ha, Half Moon Bay Condos, La Joya, Villa Fortuna and Nahil). We all need to follow their lead.

Vecinos is making a call for donations to help in the clean-up efforts. Many owners who not on the bay in the High Impact Zone have reached out wanting to contribute to the clean up. With your donations, Vecinos will help coordinate additional cleanup with property managers along Half Moon Bay. Donations made for sargassum clean-up will be used only for that purpose and no other. Please click here to donate.

All of the beach front owners need to take immediate action to work on clean-up.

Please click here to review beach cleanup best practices, shared with us by sargassum management specialists. It includes a method for cutting channels in the sargassum berms to:

    • Allow turtle access to nest and hatch,
    • Drain standing water and harmful leachates,
    • Let natural wave action begin to reduce the berms. This is helping, but we all need to keep working.

We all know this is a huge problem and it’s overwhelming, but if every building along Half Moon Bay does regular, consistent work, we’ll start chipping away at the build-up. Remember, when we work together—when there are visible efforts to manage sargassum—tourists stay longer, reviews improve, our reefs, sea turtles and wildlife thrive, and we’re ALL able to enjoy this beautiful place that so many of call home.

Join us for the next Community Sargassum Meeting on Zoom on Wednesday, July 30th at 5 p.m., where we’ll continue our community discussion with a quick overview of sargassum mitigate tools and strategies, and then decide as a community what is going to actually work best for managing sargassum on Half Moon Bay.

Please join the meeting and please get involved!  It’s going to take all of us working together! We can build a better future for North Akumal.
