Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As we move into the heart of the summer season, I want to take a moment to share important updates from Vecinos de Akumal Norte and extend deep appreciation to those who help keep our community safe, beautiful, and thriving.
Recent Projects & Ongoing Improvements
We’ve made solid progress on several key infrastructure projects this quarter:
- Road Maintenance: With the support of your dues and donations, we’ve completed much-needed repairs on the primary access road, in front of Casa Mayanáh, removing the big tope and leveling the road for better drainage, improving both safety and walkability through the neighborhood. Additional patching is planned for the fall.
- Street Lighting: Thanks to volunteer coordination by Maintenance Committee co-chairs George Pritchard and Mike Stone and funding efforts, several broken or dim streetlights have been repaired or upgraded. Better lighting continues to contribute to the safety and charm of our community, especially during evening hours.
- New Recycling Program: We're pleased to announce the launch of a community recycling and in-home compost initiative, spearheaded by Ingrid Datica, with the help of consultant Elizabeth Bautista. Please help us keep Akumal Norte clean and sustainable by participating and sorting materials appropriately. Signage and sorting guides will be continually shared to help everyone stay on top of waste reduction.
- Community Clean Up Day: We have a scheduled community clean up on July 15th, coordinated with state and local authorities including participation of Cenotes Urbanos.
None of these successes would be possible without the incredible dedication of our volunteer Board of Directors. Your long hours, thoughtful leadership, and passion for Akumal Norte are deeply appreciated by all of us. Thank you for your service to the community.
Update on the Park Area by the National Guard
Patronato Akumal Norte A.C., a group of neighbors led by Henning Bartsch, has recently proposed a plan for the Yalku Park, where our Community Center Building (currently housing the National Guard base) is located. Patronato’s plan includes a Cultural Center and Planetarium. While these plans are still in the development phase, Vecinos de Akumal Norte has many questions and concerns. Vecinos will work closely with Patronato to ensure transparent communication and that the community’s interest in preserving its character and common spaces is reflected in whatever form this project ultimately takes.
Sargassum Committee Reinstated
As many of you are aware, Half Moon Bay has once again been inundated with massive amounts of sargassum seaweed, as very little is being done this year to combat the problem. After several years of varied responses and ongoing challenges, we are reinstating a working Sargassum Committee under Vecinos de Akumal Norte.
This committee's mission is to research and communicate with local government and sargassum experts and recommend best practices and help find solutions to help mitigate the problem. We encourage any residents with expertise, time, or resources to join us in this important effort. We recognize the impact sargassum has on our natural environment, tourism, and daily enjoyment of our beaches, and we are committed to finding real, community-driven solutions.
Please remember, all of our committees are open, so if you would like to help and volunteer your time and expertise, or just want to get more involved, which we highly encourage, please reach out to us. We’d love to have you on board! We are proud of the progress being made and grateful for your continued support and involvement. Our next issue of La Voz will be out soon, so please watch your inbox for more information.
Akumal Norte is a special place, and with your participation, we can continue to protect and improve it for all who live and visit here. None of this is possible without the support of owners and neighbors like you. Your donations and membership dues are vital to the success and wellbeing of our community.
Warm regards,
